What Personal Information do we collect from you, and why?
In this Privacy Policy, “Personal information” means any information that can identify you, either on its own or in combination with other information.

Donor Information: If you make a donation through the Site, you will submit certain payment information such as your name, credit card number, email address, and billing address. All such payment information is submitted directly to our third party payment processor, Stripe or Philantro (as applicable), and used by them solely to facilitate your donation through the Site. We will, however, retain your contact information, such as your name and email address, for the following purposes:
- To establish and maintain communication with you relating to your donation;
- To issue tax receipts;
- To meet any legal or regulatory requirements such as responding to inquiries by federal or provincial administrative bodies including, but not limited to, the Canada Revenue Agency.
Loan Application Information: When you apply for a loan, you and your guarantor will submit certain Personal Information such as your names, addresses, email addresses, age, and identification numbers contained in, among other documents, government issued IDs. Beneficent collects and uses such Personal Information for the following purposes:
- To identify loan applicants and guarantors;
- To establish and administer loans;
- to maintain communication with loan applicants and guarantors relating to the loan; and
Personal Financial Information: When you apply for a loan, you and your guarantor will submit certain personal information such as employment files, credit records, loan records, tax statements, bank statements, proof of debt, and various receipts. Beneficent collects and uses such personal information for the following purposes:
- To identify and establish the creditworthiness of prospective borrowers and guarantors;
- To confirm the existence and eligibility of debt owed to third parties by prospective borrowers;
- To confirm whether prospective borrowers meet the eligibility criteria for relief; more specifically, whether their income is below the “low income cut off” as defined by Statistics Canada; and
Personal Information will not be used or disclosed for purposes other than those for which it was collected, except with your consent or as required by law.
As you use our Site, we may collect other non-personal information, such as information about how you use our Site. We use this information to maintain and improve our Site and services=.
With your consent, we may also use your Personal Information to send you email or other communications that may be of interest to you. You may opt-out of such communications at any time by selecting the unsubscribe option in any such communication that you receive. How long do we retain your personal information?
We will only retain your Personal Information for as long as is necessary for the fulfillment of the purposes for which it was collected or as required by law. Your Personal Information is securely stored until such time as it is no longer required, after which it is destroyed, rendering it unable to identify you.
How can you access, update, or delete your personal information?
The Personal Information which Beneficent keeps is kept as accurate, complete, and up-to-date as is necessary for the purposes for which it is to be used. We will give individuals reasonable access to their Personal Information and correct any Personal Information if it is inaccurate or incomplete. Loan applicants can contact their loan officers to correct, amend, or otherwise update any Personal Information provided as part of the loan application process.

Any Personal Information collected by Beneficent will be kept private and disclosed to staff and/or third parties on a need-to-know basis only.
